Leading With Laughter

Leading With Laughter

Every April,  reminds us that laughter isn’t just a pleasant workplace extra — it’s a proven leadership asset. And with  kicking off the month, it’s the perfect moment to highlight how wholesome, emotionally intelligent humor strengthens teams, reduces stress, and supports the kind of professional growth CPIA members champion.

In industries built on trust and precision — like insurance — humor can feel out of place. Yet recent research shows it’s far from frivolous. A  in Frontiers in Psychology found that leader affiliative humor — warm, inclusive, never at someone’s expense — significantly increases team trust and employees’ confidence to take initiative, both of which fuel innovation and problem solving. When people feel safe enough to laugh together, they’re more willing to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate openly.

Similarly,  published in the Journal of Managerial Psychology demonstrated that affiliative humor boosts creativity, while aggressive or sarcastic humor actually undermines it by increasing harmful, hindrance type stress. This distinction matters: humor is powerful, but only when it’s used with emotional intelligence and care. This aligns beautifully with CPIA Program values. Humor that is inclusive, uplifting, and rooted in shared experience reinforces confidence, connection, and client-centered communication. Leaders who model this tone demonstrate humility and approachability — qualities that strengthen both internal teamwork and external client relationships.

Recent work in organizational psychology also highlights humor’s role in psychological safety, a key predictor of team creativity and engagement. Leader humor can enhance psychological safety when it is positive and well-timed, helping teams feel more comfortable contributing ideas and taking interpersonal risks (Current Psychology, 2024). In other words, humor isn’t a distraction from professionalism — it’s a pathway to it.

April Fools’ Day offers a lighthearted opportunity to practice this balance. Instead of pranks that embarrass or divide, leaders can use the day to highlight the importance of joy at work. A well-placed laugh can diffuse tension, energize a team, and make even the busiest season feel more manageable.

As we celebrate National Humor Month, CPIA members are encouraged to view humor not as an afterthought or liability, but as a strategic leadership skill. When used intentionally, humor strengthens relationships, enhances learning, and builds the kind of workplace where people feel valued, supported, and ready to do their best work.

Here are 5 Ways Leaders Can Bring Humor into the Workplace:

  1. Start meetings with a light moment
A quick “good news round,” a wholesome meme, or a playful icebreaker sets a positive tone and encourages participation.
  2. Celebrate small wins with big enthusiasm
Over-the-top applause for everyday victories creates shared joy without making anyone the punchline.
  3. Use self-deprecating humor wisely
Leaders who can laugh at themselves (never at others) model humility and make the environment feel more approachable.
  4. Create a rotating “fun captain”
Each week or month, a different team member brings a wholesome joke, cartoon, or humorous observation to share.
  5. Keep a “smile file”
Invite the team to collect funny, uplifting, or heartwarming moments from the week. Share them on Fridays to reinforce positivity.

As we move into National Humor Month, let this be an invitation for insurance professionals to lead with a little more lightness. Humor doesn’t replace expertise, discipline, or accountability — it enhances them. It reminds teams that even in a demanding industry, we can create space for connection, creativity, and joy. When leaders model wholesome, inclusive humor, they cultivate workplaces where people feel energized, supported, and ready to grow. This April, may we embrace the kind of laughter that brings people together and strengthens the work we do every day.
